Description
- Digital ASICs for first users
- Re-engineering discrete digital electronics on silicon
- Practice "hands-on" instruction
- Industry standard CAD software

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are the preferred first step into digital Application Specific Integrated Circuits
(ASICs). Their flexibility and power facilitates the design of complex powerful digital systems on a single chip. FPGAs offer
lower initial cost and risk when compared with mask programmable devices.
The course describes the architecture of FPGAs and the design of a digital system using state-of-the-art CAD software

Course Contents and Time Table
On completion of the course you will have gained skills and experience in the use of electronic CAD software, and an
understanding of the implementation of digital electronics using Field Programmable Gate Arrays.
This is a flexible and interactive course. It will be predominantly practical lectures to underpin the techniques needed for
successful integrated circuit design.

Course Contents:
Introduction:
- Overview of the architecture, resources and programming styles of the most commonly use FPGAs.
- The correct design rules for successful implementation
Design Entry:
- Utilisation of schematic capture in the definition of a hierarchical digital design.
Design Verification:
- The functional simulation and verification of the digital design and the preparation for place and route
Design Configuration:
- Placing and routing the verified design, allocating architecture-specific FPGA resources.
- Back annotation of the routed timing delays for a final simulation and verification.
VHDL Entry and Synthesis
- A basic instruction in the Hardware Description Language constructs for a digital design using FPGA technologies.

Audience
Digital Electronic Design Engineers entering the FPGA arena for the first time.

Lecturers
Mr. Jeff Ormerod, MSc, BSc, MIEE, Principal Lecturer at Bolton Institute
